LAKE HIGHLANDER'S 2010 MARDI GRAS
|

The Mardi Gras festivities began with a parade around the lake. A good turnout of residents dressed in costumes and masks
took part in the parade. Many decorated their golf carts in true Mardi Gras style. As the parade wound it's way around the lake,
residents gathered at various spots to watch the parade. Shaking tambourines, singing and making lots of noise, the parade
participants threw out beads along the way. After circling the lake, the parade finished at the Club House entrance, where
judges, Ron & Kathy Barr and Doris Joanis handed their final choices for winners of best decorated golf cart, best costumed
couple and best individual costume to me, Shirley McLaughlin, Mardi Gras Organizer.
Once inside the Club House, those attending the Mardi Gras Ball, were greeted by the wonderful decorating job done by Carol
Kirkpatrick and her crew. The hall was done up in the official colors of Mardi Gras and associated images typical of Mardi Gras.
Tables were decorated with colorful table cloths of green, yellow and purple, and centre pieces of candles and Mardi Gras beads
added to the glitzy decor. Prior to the official start of the dance, prizes were awarded to:
Warren and Agnes Bowman for best decorated golf cart, Jim and Jean McNee for best costumed couple and Linda Burmeister
for best individual costume.
The music for dancing was supplied by Cruisin With Eddie and was greatly enjoyed by the dancers. Many door prizes were
drawn throughout the evening and a light snack was served buffet style. The evening ended all too soon based on the positive
comments passed along.
Although I was responsible for organizing and planning the various events for Mardi Gras, I would not have been able to do it
without the help of many volunteers. Many thanks go out to the following people who gave their time and energy to make Mardi
Gras a success. Thanks to: Carol Kirkpatrick, Donna Flint, Joan Hoyt, Roseann Hubbard, Linda Burmeister, Rachel Savage,
Betty Pyenta, and Barbara Ward. Thanks to the guys that did the ladder climbing and heavy lifting: Ross Kirkpatrick, John
Burmeister, Bill Savage, Phil McLaughlin, George Ward and Bob Birchmore. A special thanks to Dick and Loche Kline who took
care of the parade golf carts. Well done crew!
